Critical reflection

At first I found the ship assignment rather abstract and vague, mainly due to the fact that I did not knew what kind of assignment it was up front and since you only had a minute to read the assignment. However, when we were discussing it with our team values it all became more concrete and clearer. Actually the entire ship project is about team work and how we efficiently work together as a team, it makes you think about yourself and about your team. I found this a wonderful and moreover great experience.

To conclude I learned more about successfully working together as a team.

  • In order to have a successful team, you need members with different qualities. The ideal situation is if all the members have different skills, however in many cases there will be overlap.

  • To have a successful discussion with your project group, you need someone to lead it. Someone who makes sure that there is room for everyone to share their opinions.

  • The assignment made me aware of the differences and even irritations project groups could have, such as a project group with an extremely dominant person and a reserved person. The dominant person could be irritated because the reserved person is not speaking up, on the other hand the reserved person could be irritated, because of the fact that he does not receive the room to speak. Personally, I feel that this is important to keep in mind.

  • Yet again, the various cultural backgrounds came to my attention. This is most important when you are working with international companies or persons. Therefore, I mentioned the example with Emi. At first I did not know that this was the underlying reason why she was passive during discussions.
